I took this photo at the Mike Moats Macro Boot Camp in Louisville, Kentucky in March 2012.
Today’s post is about creating a better photograph of a building. Above are two images of Willard Library; the first one with some obvious problems highlighted – distracting background elements, a light pole and power line in front of the building, a dull grey sky, and an overall lack of vibrance – and the second with the problems corrected.
Removing the distracting elements was certainly more time consuming than I had anticipated but the end result was worth it. There is some distortion and perspective shift on the two reconstructed windows where the pole was removed but it is negligible. Removing, hiding, and changing the distracting background elements now draws the viewer to the center of the image. Adding a little blue to the sky and increasing the tone and contrast brings the image to life.
